About

The development of the site of the present Jury's Inn and the adjoining lands at Steamboat Quay in Limerick is one of the most visible examples of the city's regeneration in recent years.

Situated on the banks of the river Shannon and on one of the main thoroughfares into Limerick, the project was completed in 1997. The area has since become a residential and social hub with many restaurants, bars and leisure facilities in the immediate area.

History

Historically the area has had mixed fortunes. It was on Steamboat Quay that several thousands fled the horror of the Great Famine of 1845-49, to find a better life in America and beyond. This legacy is recognised in the modern sculpture that was commissioned by Edward Holdings to mark the completion of the development. In an open competition organised in association with the Limerick College of art and design, the sculpture - a fountain in the shape of a broken heart - was placed at the entrance to the Jury's Inn hotel, in memory of the forced emigration.

While Edward Holdings no longer holds an interest in the lands at Steamboat Quay it continues to hold the hotel which is currently occupied on a long-term basis by the Jury's Doyle Hotel group, and several commercial units.
