Galway to get £22m shopping centre

A major new shopping scheme is on the cards for Barrack Lane in Galway City which will see a new department store, ten shops and up to 50 new homes put in place costing £22m.

The scheme is being mooted by businessman Gerard Barrett of Edward Holdings, a Galway based property group, which has just submitted a planning application to Galway Corporation to develop the site. It is located within a short walking distance of the existing Eyre Square centre.

The proposed commercial scheme, which has been designed by Douglas Wallace architects, covers almost 85,000 sq. ft. of retail space with 3,700 sq. ft. of office space as well as providing extensions of existing retail units currently located on the perimeter of the site.

The developers claim negotiations are already ongoing with a number of national and international retail interests.

Among those British chains currently seeking to expand in Ireland are the Safeways Group.

The design will incorporate the upstanding remains of a 17th century Cromwellian demi-bastion, probably the only remaining archaeological evidence of the Cromwellian presence inside the walls of the city.

The land incorporates the former Corbetts Yard and will link into the existing Eyre Square Shopping Centre. Also included is a pedestrian walkway linking Whitehall Close to Abbeygate Street.

Galway is ranked fourth largest of the major urban centres in Ireland, and it is estimated that the city’s retailers currently serve a population of 200,000 together with a large visitor influx throughout the year.

Edward Holdings has just completed a development in Mount Kennett, Limerick which incorporates the new Jury’s Inn and commercial offices. Gerry Barrett was also a joint developer of the award winning Kirwan’s Lane.
